Karen’s recent work has explored the use of mirrors, ice, wire, technology and casting materials in the process of creating relatively small, emotive and quite often ethereal sculptures.
This latest piece, Untitled (made from beeswax cast from a cow’s heart, honey comb & bees) brings together both visceral and organic elements through a deconstructive and reconstructive process which parallels life.
Her original ideas were underpinned by internal personal conflict and absence but her new work is starting to externalise.
The heart,
a metaphor for inner feelings and
vulnerability, has been transformed from its raw state into a
swarm-like fruit
hanging from a tree. Using the borne fruit as a metaphor for new life,
hopes
and aspirations, the heart is open, strong and has been adopted by
honey bees
giving it new energy and purpose.
