Woodland-Themed Last-Minute Things to Do
Just around the corner (walkable)
Leith Hill Tower - A Victorian folly built as a memorial to its owner and to mark the highest point in South-East England. Fabulous view, surrounded by woodland. About 40 minutes walk through the woods from the Cabin
Leith Hill Place - a Victorian country house which was the country seat of the Wedgewood pottery and fine china family. Sparse design but with visits to the house possible and a position commanding sweeping views to the east. Run by the National Trust. Open at weekends in the summer. About 40 minutes walk from the Cabin.
Leith Hill Place Rhododendron Woods - Adjoining Leith Hill place, but a horticultural destination in its own right. A mass of different rhododendrons arranged into a landscaped garden with secluded walkways. Particularly beautiful in May and June. About 30 minutes walk from the Cabin
Further afield (driveable)
Alice Holt Forest - an excellent woodland playground with activities for children but also beautiful scenery for adults too. About 45 minutes by car from the Cabin.
Silent Pool - a woodland beauty spot close to Shere on the A25 - easily accessible by car and with walks up onto the North Downs. Could be combined with a visit to Silent Pool Distillery. Check opening times for the distillery. About 10 minutes by car from the Cabin.
Denbies Wine Estate - the biggest vineyard in England, this is a producer of some excellent sparkling wines. Tours are available, but I am more than happy to take you on one myself as I conducted the Vineyard Tour as a Vineyard employee in the summer of 2011, and have also worked on the vineyard team for 2 of the harvests. Just ask! Open 7 days a week. About 20 minutes by car from the Cabin.
Surrey Hills Brewery - at the back of the Denbies Wine Estate main building. Tours also available here. Check opening times.
